WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The High Point University women’s track & field team earned a number of top-10 finishes on day two of the Winston-Salem State Open Monday at the JDL Fast Track.
After breaking the school record in the weight throw on Sunday, junior Jamie Schnuck picked up where she left off with a strong seventh-place showing in the shot put Monday. The Oconomowoc, Wis., native just missed her personal-best mark with a throw of 11.20m (36-9).
Junior Sara Katherine Kirkpatrick won the 800m leg of the pentathlon (2:27.50) en route to a ninth place finish in the event on Monday with 2902 points. She also placed t-3rd in the high jump portion with a mark of 1.52m (4-11.75).
Freshman Ashlynn Schiro earned a trip to the finals of the 60m hurdles, where she placed eighth in a time of 9.26 seconds. Fellow freshman Haley Cianfarini placed 11th in the preliminary (9.39), while Mikaela Campbell (9.55) and CeAnna Soper (9.59) finished 16th and 17th, respectively.
“Jamie continued her strong weekend today and it was nice to see Ashlynn Schiro finish eighth in the hurdles to improve on her season best finish,” associate head coach Eric Dudley said. “Sara Katherine Kirkpatrick put forth a very strong performance as well in the hepathlon while winning the 800m run.”
Junior Emily De Lena led HPU with a 15th-place finish in the 200m dash (26.76) and Schiro was 21st in 27.61. Freshmen CeAnna Soper (28.16) and Haley Cianfarini (28.61) placed 24th and 28th, respectively.
The 4x400m relay team of De Lena, Schiro, Soper and Cianfarini placed seventh with a total time of 4:08.16.
In middle distance action, senior Emily Fischer placed 22nd in the 400m run (1:02.05) and sophomore Jessica Wise was 26th in 1:04.14.
“Emily De Lena showed her range as a sprinter, posting the fastest times among her teammates in the 200m and the 4×400 relay,” Dudley said. “Our women’s team is starting to chisel out a rough form of a composition. We’re looking forward to adding our league champion distance program to the mix next weekend to get a good idea of what our full capabilities are.”
HPU returns to action Sunday (Jan. 25) at the UNCG Spartan Team Challenge at the JDL Fast Track.
