NCHSAA Performance of the Week Awards

ATHLETES ACROSS THE STATE EARN NCHSAA PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK AWARDS

CHAPEL HILL— Polk County junior Hayley Kropp and South Rowan senior Cassidy Chipman of South Rowan are among the winners of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel with Subway® Restaurants.

Each week one male and one female athlete in NCHSAA competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators, but this week two winners were recognized in each category for the program to get back on its original schedule.

The male winners are Tyquan Davis of Heide Trask and Kyle Menke of Wilmington Laney.

Kropp, a 5-7 guard, averaged 15 points, 12 rebounds and five assists in three games last week while leading the Wolverines to a pair of Western Highlands Conference victories. She narrowly missed a triple double in pacing Polk County to a 52-37 over Charles D. Owen, with 17 points, 17 rebounds and eight assists. She also had 16 points, nine rebounds, four assists and six steals in a 47-34 victory at Hendersonville. She started the week with 11 points, 11 rebounds and four assists in a last-second loss to North Henderson.

Kropp was an all-conference selection in three different sports last year, including cross-country, softball and basketball.

Chipman scored her 1,000th career point last week in a South Piedmont Conference victory over Northwest Cabarrus, a game in which she poured in 25 points, had four blocked shots and four steals. She averages 16 points, 13 rebounds and four assists per contest.

Davis, an outstanding men’s basketball player, had 20 points and eight rebounds last week against Pender and then followed that by pouring in 21 points against Clinton. The Titans are currently leading the Four County Conference.

Menke, a top wrestler for Laney, started the week with a pin in a dual meet against New Hanover and then earned three more pins in the Veterans Cup Wrestling Tournament over the weekend, including a victory in just 32 seconds to win the 160-pound championship. His victories helped Laney earn the team title in the event.

TWC SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during a SportsNight show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients are also recognized via Twitter and Facebook.
