LYNCHBURG, Va. – Guilford College senior Matt McCarthy totaled a game-high 20 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and two steals in the visiting Quakers’ 75-54 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball victory over Randolph College Wednesday.

Teammate Jonny Rice collected 19 points and 10 rebounds for his team-leading seventh double-double of the year in Guilford’s (11-4, 5-2 ODAC) fifth win in six games.

McCarthy and Trever Hyatt (15 points) both scored nine points in the first half, which sparked Guilford to a 35-25 halftime lead.

The WildCats (10-6, 4-3 ODAC) closed to within seven on Zach Desgain’s traditional three-point play in the second half’s opening minute, but the Quakers made timely baskets, many from long distance, and led comfortably for the remainder of the game.

Guilford finished with 12 three-pointers, which matched its season high. McCarthy, the ODAC trifectas leader, made four-of-six from beyond the arc and Hyatt connected on five three-pointers. The Quakers held a 43-31 rebounding advantage and converted nine offensive boards into 17 second-chance points, compared to Randolph’s two. Guilford turned the ball over just six times, it’s fewest miscues since the 2-12-13 season-opening win over Southern Virginia University.

Desgain paced the hosts with 18 points and Gordon Rogo tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers return home Saturday (1/24) to host Washington and Lee University at 3:00 p.m. in another ODAC game.
