GREENSBORO, NC – Shanita Hampton and Alexis Hite each scored a team high thirteen points on Wednesday night as the Pride topped the Panthers of Ferrum College in USA South play 66-58.
The Pride came out of the starting gate fast opening the game on a 6-0 run to take an early lead. Syerra Troutman got the scoring started in the game before Azha McNeil and Vontreece Hayes chipped in the next four points.
After establishing the 6-0 lead, the Pride was able to stay out in front of the Panthers until the 2:46 mark on the first half clock when Ferrum’s Jacole Hairston gave the visitors a narrow lead at 32-31.
The Panther lead did not hold long. Greensboro was able to storm back out a six point advantage heading into the halftime break at 39-33 following an 8-1 run. Just thirty seconds after falling behind by the one point margin, Troutman was once again able to put Greensboro on top before Hayes, Kamerin Williams, and Tiffani Stephens capped off the scoring in the half with one bucket each.
In the second half of play, Greensboro College was able to push their lead out to double digits at 56-46 following a two point basket by Shanita Hampton.
Once Greensboro established the double digit lead, Ferrum would pull to within six points at 64-58 with just under a minute to play but the Pride was able to hold strong for the victory.
“We did a great job executing on both ends of the court today,” Pride Assistant Coach Jennifer King said following the victory. “I thought that we did a great job playing inside out in the game and knocking down big shots. We do not have much time rest before our next game, so we have to take this momentum going into Saturday and try to get another victory.”
Tiffani Stephens was the only other Greensboro player to join Hampton and Hite in the double figure scoring category. Stephens finished the game with eleven points, on four of elven shooting from the field, while tying her single game block record with seven.
Greensboro College once again was able to establish a positive rebound margin, as they finished the contest with a narrow 42-40 advantage on the boards. Sophomore guard Joslyn Spires joined Stephens with a team high eight boards while Troutman and Kamerin Williams chipped in with four each.
Jacole Hairston led the Panthers with a game high twenty-one points on eight of nineteen shooting.
With the win, the Pride moves their overall record to 9-3 on the season and 4-2 in USA South Athletic Conference play. The Pride women will return to Mayo C. Harlow Memorial Court on Saturday afternoon when the welcome conference foe Methodist University to town. The game is set to get underway at 4:00 PM.
