FOREST, Va. – Guilford College senior Matt McCarthy (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) earned the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s (ODAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week Award Monday. McCarthy, who has not previously won the honor, is Guilford’s first recipient of the league’s weekly prize since January 2013.

McCarthy, a 6-2 senior shooting guard, averaged 16.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game in the Quakers’ 2-0 week. He shot 48 percent from the floor, including eight-of-16 from three-point land, and averaged four trifectas per game. McCarthy made just one turnover in 60 minutes of action. He notched his third-straight 20-point game and flirted with a triple-double in the Quakers’ 74-54 road win over league-foe Randolph College Jan. 21. The two-time All-ODAC pick totaled 20 points on eight-of-12 shooting, and posted career highs with nine rebounds and seven assists. McCarthy had 12 points, four boards and three assists in Guilford’s 71-56 ODAC win over visiting Washington and Lee University Jan. 24, which marked the Quakers’ season-best fourth straight win.

McCarthy averages a club-high 14.9 points per game, the ODAC’s seventh-highest figure. He leads the league with 3.2 three-pointers per game and ranks second in steals (2.1 spg.). McCarthy also stands among the league leaders in free-throw percentage (.807, 7th), assists (3.1 apg., 10th), assist-to-turnover ratio (2.4, 3rd) and minutes (8th, 30.3 mpg). Through games of Jan. 25, McCarthy ranks 17th among NCAA Division III leaders with 54 three-pointers. Last week passed Jordan Snipes ’07 for 27th place on Guilford’s career scoring list with 1,121 points and sits third in school history with 229 three-pointers, fourth-best among Division III’s active men’s basketball players.

Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers (13-4, 6-2 ODAC) start the week in a share of second place in the league standings. Guilford visits ODAC-rival Emory & Henry College Wednesday (1/28) for a 7:00 p.m. before returning home Saturday (1/31) for a 4:00 p.m. league game with Eastern Mennonite University.
