Howard Leads GC Pride Men To 65-50 Win Over Panthers

GREENSBORO, NC – The Greensboro College men’s basketball team picked up their seventh straight home win on Wednesday night by defeating the Panthers of Ferrum College 65-50. Simeon Howard continued his tear of late finishing the night with a game high 24 points to go along with ten rebounds.

In the first half of play, Greensboro College took an early 7-2 lead following a basket by Raheem Martin. Following the Martin make, Ferrum was able to outscore the Pride 13-3 over the game’s next eight minutes putting Greensboro in a 15-10 deficit.

After trading the next two baskets in the game, Greensboro was once again able to retake the lead at 21-18 following an 11-3 run of their own. David Leaman got the run started for Greensboro when he connected on his only shot of the night from the right elbow before Joseph Gatling and Parris Scales scored the final five points of the string.

Once Greensboro reestablished their lead, they were able to keep in front of Ferrum heading into the halftime break up by three at 26-23.

Coming out of the halftime break, Greensboro was able to take control of the game After Ferrum pulled within seven points at 52-45 with just over three minutes to play, Greensboro was to extend their lead over the Panthers to double digits taking their largest lead of the game at 65-48 with fifty-one seconds to play following an old fashion three point play by Howard.

Ferrum would score on final basket of the game, but it was not enough Greensboro came away with a 15 point victory at 65-50.

“I thought we did a great job executing our game plan tonight and we were really physical which allowed us to control to the boards,” Pride Head Coach Bryan Galuski said following the game. “We have continued to mature as a team, but we have got to continue our growth through the remainder of the season especially as we head on the road on Saturday afternoon to take on a very tough North Carolina Wesleyan team.”

Joseph Gatling and Will Griffin also joined Howard in double figures. Gatling finished the game with eleven points on the night while Griffin converted on four of his five shots to come away with ten points.

The Pride men were also to control the glass throughout the game finishing the night with a large 47-25 advantage. Greensboro was also able to convert their eighteen offensive rebounds into twenty second chance points.

The Pride men once again posted a big number in the assist coloum with twelve on twenty-five made baskets. Hamilton Hawkins led Greensboro with five assists while his teammates Simeon Howard and Brandon Pascucci added two assists each.

With the win the Pride men move their overall record to 12-6 on the season while going to 5-2 in USA South Athletic Conference play. The Pride men will return to the court on Saturday afternoon when they travel to the Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan in another USA South showdown. The game is set to get underway at 2:00 PM.
