Elon MBB Falls to Hot-Shooting Huskies in Boston

BOSTON – Northeastern’s formidable duo of Zach Stahl and Scott Eatherton were too much for the Elon men’s basketball team to overcome in an 80-61 setback at Matthews Arena on Saturday night, Jan. 31, in Boston.

Stahl and Eatherton finished a combined 16-of-18 from the floor, leading a Huskies squad that shot 60 percent for the game – a season-high for any opponent against the Phoenix. Stahl had a game-high 19 points, while Eatherton ended the night with 16.

NU improves to 15-8 (7-3 CAA) on the year, while Elon drops to 11-12 (3-7 CAA) with the loss.

“I thought we fought hard, but credit Northeastern for shooting the ball well tonight,” said Elon head coach Matt Matheny. “[Northeastern] dictated the game for the better part of 40 minutes. We’ll learn from this and move on.”

The Phoenix shot 43 percent for the game, as Elijah Bryant scored a team-best 13 points, followed by Austin Hamilton’s 11-point night.

Over the last 5:46 of the opening frame, NU went on a 16-3 run and held Elon to just one field goal make, as the maroon and gold trailed 40-25 after 20 minutes of action. Northeastern controlled the boards, 23-12, in the first half and hit 13-of-23 (57 percent) from the floor. NU also took advantage of its free-throw attempts, hitting 12-of-17, while Elon went 0-of-3.

The Huskies went ahead by as many as 27 points in the second half, hitting 15-of-24 from the floor (63 percent) in the final 20 minutes.

Elon returns home on Thursday, Feb. 5, to host Drexel inside Alumni Gym at 7 p.m.
