Game Report on Vandalia Christian-Gospel Light from Friday night with Michael Fields:VCS Vikings in OT

Courtesy of Michael Fields(GTCC) reporting for GreensboroSports.com on the road with Vandalia Christian School:

It was hype in Walkertown, North Carolina last Friday night.

All of the hype was at Gospel Light Christian School.

They were hosting Vandalia Christian School in a huge conference matchup. The primetime game was the varsity boys basketball team. Both teams have been playing extremely well this season. Both teams played well in the non-conference schedule and let the momentum carry as they played in conference play. Until this game, Gospel Light Christian had not lost a conference game.

Until this game, Vandalia Christian had only lost one conference game in a tough loss to Alamance Christian. This game could help determine who would win the conference and the conference seedings going into their tournament.

This game was even bigger, because this is a huge rivalry. The rivalry of VCS-GLCS could possibly be the biggest rivalry in Christian school period. This rivalry is always hard fought and excellent games. This game was like every other game in this incredible rivalry.

VCS came out of the gate ready to play. They played really well in the first quarter. They went out of the first quarter with the lead. They kept the momentum going in the second quarter. Overall, the key to the first half was the Viking defense. The Vikings held the Lions of Gospel Light Christian to single digits in terms of scoring both quarters going into halftime.

The Vikings went into halftime with the momentum on offense and defense. It was a different story in the second half.

The Lions came out of halftime ready to play. You could tell that they were fired up at halftime. They realized what they needed to do to get back into the game. They did exactly that. The third quarter was higher scoring than the first half.

Gospel Light won the third quarter. They cut into the Viking lead. The fourth quarter had pretty much no scoring. It was overall sloppy play and dominated by defense. In the end, the Lions won the fourth quarter and forced overtime.

Going into overtime, the momentum had turned to the Lions. They were going into overtime at home after overcoming a significant lead. They felt good going into overtime.

It was going to be a little bit tougher for the Vikings to pull this out in overtime. They lost a lead and were going into overtime at a rival’s place on a late Friday night.

The Lions started out overtime determined and ready to get the win. At one point in overtime, the Vikings were down by five points. The Vikings players had their heads down and looked beaten.

Coach Ryan Nelson called a key timeout. He gathered his guys and completely fired them up. The Vikings came out ready and took the lead over and eventually went on to the win.
