Game Report on Southwest Guilford-Ragsdale Boys Basketball

It was an emotional night as the Cowboys played hosts to city and conference rival Ragsdale for senior night. The Cowboys were looking to remain unbeaten at the top of the Piedmont Triad 4A, while the Tigers were trying to spoil the party. Ragsdale played spoiler early on going up 4-0. The emotions of senior night got the better of the Cowboys for the entire opening frame as they only managed a pair of 3 pointers and allowed the Tigers to dominate the quarter taking it 13-6. During the quarter break the Cowboys decided to play some basketball and opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run going up 16-13. But the run ended as the Tigers clawed back with spurts of their own and then the teams traded baskets until late in the quarter. With 20 seconds remaining in the half and the game tied at 25, the Cowboys came down and hit a 3 pointer, forced a turnover and then came down and Ben Ferguson hit his third of seven 3 pointers on the night just before the halftime buzzer to pull ahead 31-25 going into the break. The second half opened with the teams trading baskets again on the opening couple of possessions, but the pressure of the Cowboys began to wear down on the Tigers and the lead steadily increased to double figures at 37-27 at the 3:50 mark. The Cowboys margin was in the teens until a desperation 3 point heave at the close of the quarter banked in to take it to 50-41 going into the final frame. The fourth quarter opened with another Cowboys run of 9-0 for the first 3 minutes of the quarter. Ragsdale finally put points on the board for the frame at the 5:00 minute mark. Southwest pressured the Tigers and wouldn’t allow them to get into a rhythm until the closing minutes when the Tigers began to hit desperate threes. In the end however, it was just too much Cowboys as they cruised to a 74-56 victory remaining perfect in conference play at 8-0. Ragsdale was led by Austin Love with 11 points. Southwest was led by Ben Ferguson with 21, 2 Rebs, 2 Stls, KJ Langley wiht 15, 5 Asts, 3 Rebs, and Kam Langley with 14, 5 Stls, 4 Rebs, and 3 Asts. The Cowboys thank the Seniors for their great contributions all season long.
