GUILFORD’S RICE LANDS ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT MEN’S BASKETBALL HONORS

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford College senior Jonny Rice (Fayetteville, N.C./Terry Sanford) has been named to the Capital One NCAA Division III Academic All-District V team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday. Rice advances to the Capital One/CoSIDA Division III Academic All-America ballot. The All-America Team will be announced on February 24.

The all-district squads are comprised of men’s basketball students from NCAA Division III institutions in the 10-state area from Virginia to Missouri. Nominees were starters or key reserves of sophomore academic standing or above who maintained at least a 3.3 grade point average.

Rice, a 6-4, 205-pound forward, has started all 20 of Guilford’s games this season. Rice is second on the team in points per game (15.4 ppg.) and leads the team in rebounds (8.2 rpg.). His numbers also top ODAC rankings as he is fifth in the league in points and fourth in rebounds per game.

A member of Guilford’s Fall 2014 Student-Athlete Honor Roll, Rice is a dean’s list economics major with a 3.62 grade point average. Before transferring to Guilford in the fall of 2013, Rice was named to the dean’s list at Washington and Lee University where he also played two seasons with the basketball team.

Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers are 15-5, 8-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Guilford enters Saturday’s game at Shenandoah University in third place in the ODAC standings. Tipoff in Winchester, Va. is set for 2:00 p.m.
