College Men’s Basketball Final – Hampden-Sydney 67, Guilford 61 (OT)

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Leon Hargrove scored nine of his team-high 16 points in Hampden-Sydney College’s 67-61 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win over visiting Guilford College, 67-61.
The Tigers (12-7, 5-5 ODAC) snapped the Quakers’ (15-5, 8-3 ODAC) six-game winning streak in their first game in a week. Hampden-Sydney was closed for three days and all activities were cancelled due to widespread illness on the campus, which also forced the postponement of last Saturday’s contest with Emory & Henry College.

Guilherme Guimaraes’ free throw with 22 seconds left in regulation forced the extra frame after Guilford erased a 10-point deficit in the final seven minutes. The Quakers’ Jonny Rice scored 10 of Guilford’s 13 points in the late rally, including two free throws with 1:27 remaining that gave the Quakers a 53-52 edge.

Guimaraes opened overtime with a three-pointer as the Tigers scored the extra frame’s first six points. Guilford had a turnover and two missed shots on its first three overtime possessions.

Hargrove buried back-to-back jumpers and made a free throw with 50 seconds left in extra time to give Hampden-Sydney a 62-55 lead. Guilford’s Sanders Rohs and Matt McCarthy hit three-pointers sandwiched around a Tigers’ free throw, which trimmed the Quakers’ deficit to 63-61.

Forced to foul, Guilford sent Hargrove to the line twice in the final 20 seconds and he made all four shots for the game’s final score.

Hargrove’s 16 points paced three Tigers in double-figure scoring. Jake Duncan added 14 points and Greg Lewis tallied 13. Mike Murray scored five points on one-of-10 field-goal shooting, but dished out a game-high 10 assists.

McCarthy’s 25 points paced all scorers and Rice finished with 16. Guilford launched a season-high 37 three-point shots, a school-record 20 by McCarthy, and made 10 (27%), which contributed to a lackluster 35.9% overall shooting night. Rice and Zachary Houston both collected a game-best eight rebounds.
Guilford visits league-rival Shenandoah University Saturday in another ODAC contest.
