Elon Track and Field Opens at Buccaneer Invite

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Elon University women’s track and field team opened competition today, Feb. 6, at the Buccaneer Invitational, hosted by East Tennessee State, inside the MSHA Athletics Center.

Junior Jennifer Esposito had the fastest time in the preliminary round of the 400-meter dash. Esposito clocked in a time of 57.25 and will compete in the finals tomorrow.

Fellow junior Sydney Griffin also qualified for the finals in her event, the 60-meter hurdles, after running a time of 8.97 in the semifinal round. Griffin was also the Phoenix’s top finisher in the 200-meter preliminaries with her time of 26.55.

During Friday’s field events, sophomore Briana O’Grady had a toss of 47’ 6.25” (14.48m) in the weight throw. Junior Megan Kirschling was seventh overall in the women’s high jump with a cleared height of 5’ 4.25” (1.63m) while Jayna Coyle was eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 36’ 11.5” (11.26m).

The second and final day of the meet will kick off tomorrow morning, Feb. 7, beginning with the women’s long jump at 8:30 a.m.
