College Indoor Track and Field News – Goncarovs Wins 3,000 Meter Relay as Guilford Competes in Vince Brown Invitational

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Andris Goncarovs collected an event win as Guilford College competed in the Vince Brown Invitational at Christopher Newport University Sunday afternoon. Schools from all NCAA divisions participated, included members of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Goncarovs’ 3,000 meter dash time (8:50.45) was 6.74 seconds faster than the second best time, claiming the victory in the race. The senior’s finish stands as the third-fastest 3,000 meter finish in Guilford history.

Alex Martin (Pfafftown, N.C./Reagan) broke a near five-year long jump record, finishing third in the meet with a mark of 6.76 meters. His best mark tied two other athletes, but the freshman’s sixth and final jump of 6.70 meters, his second best attempt, broke the tie to claim third place. Martin also ran the fastest Guilford time in the 60 meter dash this season, running the race in 7.13 seconds. His time finished 19th, but was the fourth-fastest Division III time in the meet.

Trent Evans (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) cracked the top-eight 400 meter run times in program history with a time of 52.85 seconds.

Molly Anne Marcotte finished with the third-fast 5,000 meter run time in Guilford history at 20:21.58. The time was also the third best Division III finish in the race.

Sommer Fanney (Burlington, N.C./Williams) ran the sixth-fastest mile run time in program history, finishing the race at 5:49.72. Her time was just .02 seconds away from cracking the top-five all-time Guilford finishes.

Becca Benfield posted the second best shot put mark in program history, throwing 941 meters.

Jennifer Thomas (Randleman, N.C./Randleman) finished with the seventh-fastest 60 meter dash time at 8.97 seconds. Thomas now holds six of the program’s eight fastest 60 meter dash times in Guilford history.

The Quakers return to the track February 20th and 21st, participating in the Kent Taylor Invite at the University of North Carolina.
