GC Pride WBB Push Win Streak To Eight With 58-54 Victory At Meredith

RALEIGH, NC = The Greensboro College Pride women’s basketball team pushed their win streak to eight games on Sunday afternoon. After falling behind by an early ten point deficit, Greensboro was able to fight back to defeat Meredith College 58-54.

In the first six minutes of play Greensboro fell behind by a 12-2 mark before they were able to get their offense going.

Once the Pride offense got their momentum going, they were able to outscore the Angels 18-2 over the span of eight minutes to take a 20-14 lead with 5:33 to play in the opening frame. Senior Shanita Hampton got the comeback started for Greensboro with eight straight points, including two treys, before fellow senior Tiffani Setphens brought the Pride to within 14-13 with an old fashion three point play.

Following the three point play by Stephens, freshman post player Azha McNeil tied the game with a free throw, at 14-14, before Kamerin Williams gave Greensboro the 20-14 advantage with four straight points.

Over the course of the final five minutes of the half, the Pride was able to build an 26-18 lead following a Joslyn Spires layup at the horn of the opening period.

Coming out of the halftime break, Greensboro kept their margin at five when Meredith faught back to take the lead at 39-38 with 12:11 to play in the contest.

The Angels then kept the Pride at bay until Hampton and Vontreece Hayes combined to score fifteen points over the final five minutes of play to preserve the four point victory.

Hampton finished the afternoon with a game high 24 points while Joslyn Spires chipped in nine points. Azha McNeil, Vontreece Hayes, and Alexis Hite each pulled down six rebounds apiece to lead the way for the Pride.

With the four point victory, Greensboro pushes their overall record to 16-3 on the season while improving to 11-2 in USA South Athletic Conference play. The Pride women will return to action on Wednesday night when they travel to take on the Panthers of Ferrum College. The game is set to get underway at 7:00 PM.
