College Men’s Track & Field News – Guilford’s Martin Named ODAC Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week

FOREST, Va. – Guilford College freshman Alex Martin (Winston-Salem, N.C./Reagan) earned the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s Men’s Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week Award Monday. Martin is the first Quaker so honored since senior teammate Andris Goncarovs won the weekly prize in January 2013.

Martin shined at the Vince Brown Invitational Feb. 8 in Newport News, Va. He set the school record in the long jump with a leap of 6.76 meters, which matched the league’s best and the 40th-longest jump in NCAA Division III this season. He placed third in the 40-man field, tops among Division III contestants. Martin surpassed the Quakers’ previous standard of 6.59 meters set in 2010 by Quan Parker.
Martin also posted Guilford’s low times in the 60- and 200-meter dashes. His time of 7.13 seconds in the 60 placed 19th in the 75-runner race, fourth among Division III contestants. The time ranks third in the ODAC this season. His 23.39 in the 200 also stands third in the conference and placed 29th in the 89-man race, ninth among non-scholarship runners.

Martin has two of Guilford’s three-fastest 60-meter times this season and four of the Quakers’ top-five 200 clockings. He also owns the team’s three-best long jumps.

Coach Danny Cash’s team returns to action Feb. 20-21 at the Kent Taylor Invitational at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
