GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College scored seven of their nine runs in the final three innings to lift the Quakers past Averett University, 9-3, Wednesday afternoon in Guilford’s first home game of 2015.

Both teams were tied, 1-1, after the first four innings before Jacob Roberts hit a triple down the left field line all the way to the wall to re-claim the Quaker lead, 2-1. After Averett countered the next half inning to tie the score again, the Quakers scored four un-answered runs over the next two innings to create distance from the Cougars. After another Averett run in the top of the eight inning, Guilford added three insurance runs in the bottom half of the frame the secure the win.

Roberts finished the afternoon 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, triple, and two RBI. Logan Jones also drove in two runs on his 2-of-5 outing at the plate.

Timothy Coston and Nic Futrell each drove in a run a piece for the Cougars with Coston adding a double. J.T. Crowder was the lone Quaker with multiple hits on the afternoon, finishing 2-for-5.

Avery Rogers earned the start for the Quakers, throwing four and one-third innings, giving up one run on four hits while striking out and walking two batters a piece. Darin Salter (1-0) collected the win, relieving Rogers to throw three and two-thirds innings and giving just one run on two hits while fanning one. Justin Morrison (High Point, N.C./High Point Christian) threw the final inning, giving up just one hit while striking out two.

Coston (0-1) took the loss for Averett, throwing five-plus innings giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits while fanning and walking one batter.

The Quakers (1-2) return to the diamond Saturday, hosting Bluefield State College for two seven-inning games beginning at noon.
