Elon Track and Field Set to Compete at High Point Team Challenge

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s track and field team returns to action this week as the Phoenix journeys to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the High Point Team Challenge on Thursday, Feb. 12, inside the JDL Fast Track complex.

Last Time Out
The Phoenix competed last weekend, Feb. 6-7, at the Buccaneer Invite at East Tennessee State. The maroon and gold had a few standout performers at the meet led by junior Sydney Griffin in the 60-meter hurdles. Griffin finished as the runner-up in the race with a time of 8.82 and also qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championships.

Fellow junior Jen Esposito had the fastest time in the qualifying round of the 400-meters with her time of 57.25, but could not compete in the finals due to injury.

Sophomore Bre’anna Warren threw a mark of 44’ 2” (13.46m) in the shot put to finish eighth overall while rookie Bryanna Hames finished just outside of the top 10 in the event with her heave of 41′ 5″ (12.62m).

Seven Qualifies for ECAC
The Phoenix has seven members of its program qualified for the ECAC Indoor Championships next month in Boston after Griffin’s time this past weekend. Griffin joins Esposito (400-meters), Warren (shot put), Elyse Bierut (3,000-meters), Emily Dixon (pentathlon) Kimberly Johansen (1,000-meters and one-mile) and Tereza Novotna (one-mile).

On Deck
Elon returns to the state of Virginia next weekend, Feb. 20-21, to compete at its final indoor meet of the regular season, the Virginia Tech Challenge.
