College Men’s Basketball Final – Guilford 103, Roanoke 78

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior Will Freeman led five Quakers in double-figure scoring with a career-high 21 points in Guilford College’s 103-78 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win over visiting Roanoke College Wednesday.

Freeman connected on eight-of-11 field goals and made all five free throws in 14 productive minutes off the bench. The 6-5 junior forward made his first four shots from the floor and tallied 16 second-half points. Freeman and teammate Jonny Rice (15 points) helped the Quakers (16-6, 9-4 ODAC) own a 45-31 edge in interior scoring.

Guilford came out firing and connected on 60 percent of its first-half field goals, including six-of-13 three-pointers. Rice collected 13 points and teammate Sanders Rohs netted all of his career-high eight points in the first half. Roanoke (9-13, 4-9 ODAC) held a 12-10 lead five minutes into the game, but the Quakers closed the period by outscoring the Maroons, 41-12.

The hot shooting continued into the second half as Guilford made four three-pointers in the first two minutes, which swelled its lead to 63-28. Roanoke shot over 57 percent from the floor and outscored the Quakers in the second period, 54-52, but the damage was done in the opening frame as Guilford built a 51-24 lead.

Guilford surpassed the 100-point plateau for the first time since January 7, 2009, on an Adrian Drew three-pointer in the final minute. In addition to shooting over 50 percent from the floor, the Quakers matched their season low with just six turnovers.

Guilford’s Trever Hyatt knocked down four three-pointers and Matt McCarthy added three as the Quakers shot 13-of-30 (43.3%) from long range. The pair joined Rice with 15 points in the game. Rookie Jarrod Rogers added three long three-pointers on the way to a career-high 11 points and also dished out a personal-best six assists. Zachary Houston led the Quakers’ passers with a career-high seven dimes. Cole Greene chipped in six points and a game-high seven rebounds off the bench.

Roanoke’s Andrew Daniels poured in a game-high 25 points thanks to four three-pointers. He tallied 16 points in the second half. Teammate John Fitchett tallied 19 off the bench, 14 in the second half. Fitchett was one of three Maroons with five rebounds and also blocked two shots.

Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers entertain league-foe Bridgewater College Saturday (2/14) at 4:30 p.m. on Guilford’s annual Senior Day.
