College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 61, Roanoke 49

SALEM, Va. – Lauren Ramsey (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) led all scorers with 16 points as Guilford College earned a Wednesday evening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Roanoke College, 61-49. The win marks the Quakers’ fifth straight win and their fifth straight contest holding their opponents to fewer than 50 points.

Guilford (14-8, 8-5 ODAC) produced a 9-0 run over a 1:37 stretch early in the first half only to be countered with a 8-0 run from Roanoke (7-15, 3-10 ODAC) immediately after. The game would remain tight throughout the rest of the first half with Guilford’s largest lead capped at five points after the early run. Guilford expanded the advantage in the second half after holding Roanoke without a field goal for a 9:35 stretch in the latter portion of the second half that included a 4:05 scoring drought for the Maroons.

Ramsey’s 16 points came on 5-of-12 shooting including 2-of-3 from three-point range. The freshman also shot 4-of-4 from the foul line. Heaven Walters (Yadkinville, N.C./Starmount) was the remaining Quaker in double-figure scoring, finishing with 10 points off the bench. Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) added nine points and a team-leading eight rebounds with three steals.

Meghan Gadell and Kanisha Wiley led Roanoke with nine points a piece. Wiley added seven rebounds and shot 4-of-6 from the field. Cary Beahm added eight points and six rebounds.

Guilford shot a consistent 35.5 percent for the contest with nearly identical field-goal percentages for each half (35.3 percent in the first half, 35.7 percent in the second half). The Quakers shot a blistering 9-of-15 (60 percent) from three-point range and a perfect 8-of-8 from the foul line. Roanoke shot 37.3 percent from the field after shooting 39.3 percent in the first half. The Maroons shot 4-of-11 from beyond the arc.

Roanoke out-rebounded Guilford, 39-36, though the Quakers won the battle on the offensive glass, 14-12. The Quakers forced 17 Roanoke turnovers and produced 22 points off the Maroons’ miscues. The Maroons forced 11 Guilford turnovers to produce seven points.

The Quakers return home Saturday, hosting Virginia Wesleyan College inside Ragan-Brown Field House at 2 p.m. in Guilford’s annual Play 4 Kay Cancer Awareness Game.
