End of the Night Notes on High School Basketball

Page tops Southern Alamance to take the Metro Conference again….Page (19-1) in the Metro Conference over the past two seasons….The Dudley girls claim the Metro Conference regular season title with their (9-1) mark after a victory at Southeast Guilford….The two girls teams split during the regular season, with each team winning on the other team’s court….We may well see Dudley-SEG Part III next Friday night in the Metro Conference Tournament Finals at Dudley….The Smith men defeated Grimsley to take the #2 spot for the Metro men/boys…..Page #1 and Smith #2 for the boys next week, with Dudley #1 and SEG #2 for the ladies….Page boys (10-0), Smith boys (6-4), Dudley girls (9-1) and SEG girls at (8-2)…

The Metro 4-A basketball coaches will meet tomorrow and I believe the meeting will be at Dudley and they will vote on the All-Conference team and on the Players of the Year for the girls and boys….Conventional wisdom tells us the boy’s vote for Player of the Year will come down to Aaron Simpson from Smith and Jalen Seegars from Page….May wrong and sometimes that is the case, but if I were at the convention, that’s how I would be talking….For the girls it will be a toss-up, you have to think….And you have to think that Harrison(Kiara) and Abraham from Dudley are in that conversation, while Hardnett and Phifer are in the talks for the girls…

On the boys court it will probably come down to who the coaches feel has done the better job of carrying his team, Simpson or Seegars…..They both have had outstanding seasons, Simpson the senior and Seegars the junior…

The Northwest Guilford girls won by 17 over at East Forsyth tonight from what I was hearing and the Vikings are now at (24-0) on the season and that (24-0) means those girls are getting it done 24/7….The are the top girls team in our area and it would be money well-spent to pay to see them meet the Dudley girls somewhere in the playoffs, but for some reason, those dream games never seem to come true…..

Greensboro Day Boys by 26 over Davidson Day tonight at GDS and that is a solid win…I felt like the loss down at Davidson Day was a fluke, but I bet you I couldn’t get anybody from Davidson Day to agree with me on that one….Davidson Day girls win and they finish unbeaten in the PACIS….Davidson Day girls appear to be for real…..

The Caldwell Academy girls are “for real” and we knew that before and then they went out and proved that again tonight as they won the Triad Athletic Conference for the independent schools to go (23-6) on the year and the win came over the Burlington School if my sources were on the money…..The Burligton School boys were in line to win the TAC boys and they have lost maybe one game all year long and they were due to meet Westchester Country Day in the TAC men’s final….

The Caldwell Academy girls should be ready to grab a good seed going into next week’s NCISAA Girls 2-A Tournament….Ren Stewart at Caldwell for Coach of the Year and Peyton Kadlecek for Player of the Year….

The NCISAA will set their seeds for next week’s tournament on Saturday and you have think that two-time defending state 3-A Champ Wesleyan will get the #1 Seed, the Greensboro Day School goes #2, High Point Christian is in there somewhere in the top five and I would guess Davidson Day would get a decent seed…The loss to Davidson probably cost Greensboro Day any chance at the top seed, but hey, this should make for another big tourney again in 2015….GDS and WES split in the regular and the weather is not expected to hot up in Asheville next week, but the matchup between WES and GDS, might be the hottest ticket in the state….

WES has lost Kwe Parker for the season and not sure how that will affect their chances in the Big Tourney……..Harry Giles will be expected to carry into and out of Asheville and they plan to leave with the title, but GDS may have more to say about that and we can more at that later next week and how could and will the weather affect this event??? Girls-wise Davidson Day looks like a favorite and you have like the chances of our local team Caldwell Academy when they get up in the mountains….

Coach of the Year, we have talked about a few with Ren Stewart at Caldwell a strong candidate, Matt Harder, the first-year coach at Page has to given very strong consideration in the Metro 4-A, as does first-year head coach Rachel Clark at Southeast Guilford….Coach Daryl Steele is a worthy candidate in the Mid-State 3-A for the job he has done with the Northeast Guilford Rams and the girls team…..Kim Furlough, at Northern Guilford, is another top candidate for the girls of the Mid-State 3-A….
Coach Shearin over at High Point Andrews ought to be ready to claim the crown for top coach again on the PAC 6 2-A level, unless Trinity makes a charge for their overall finish….Piedmont Triad 4-A needs to belong to Coach Joyner for her job with the Northwest Guilford girls(24-0) and to Coach Shavers for having the SWG boys on top again…..Mid-State 3-A boys top coaching award could end up in the hands of Coach Chambers at Northern Guilford or Coach Spinks at Eastern Guilford…Both have done a very solid job with their teams….Coach Whitaker, at Southern Guilford deserves a mention or two in the Mid-Piedmont 3-A Conference…..Any other coaches or Players of the Year, we might be talking about here??? Quayson Williams POY Mid-State 3-A Boys? K.J. Langley POY Piedmont Triad 4-A? Hayley Barber, Morgan Pointer or Toni Tucker, POY for the Piedmont Triad 3-A girls and what about Sydney Wilson for POY for the girls in the Mid-State 3-A??? Has to be somebody from HP Andrews for the girls in the PAC 6 2-A…..Timberlake or Taylor???….Harry Giles and Tamera Thorpe for the boys and girls in the PACIS POY’s……

Lots of stuff on the list tonight and might be ready to add a few more topics for our late-night reading……
+++++Interesting note on High Point Andrews’ girls from Michael Lindsay at the High Point Enterprise by way of twitter:
With Friday night’s win, the T.W. Andrews girls went 10-0 in the PAC-6 2A for the fourth year in a row….(40-0) in the conference over the past 4 years, and that is quite an accomplishment….+++++

*****One of the most interesting topics of the day might be the return of the Dudley Panthers to the Haeco Invitational Basketball Tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center……Northeast Guilford out and Dudley back in….*****

Grimsley-Smith girls scoring from last night’s game with Grimsley taking the win, 43-35….

Grimsley scoring:
Leigh Ramsey 18 points….Rebecca Little 9 points…Aliyah Burton 5 points…Anna Peterson with 4 points…Imani Smith with 4 points…Kiarra Miller with 1 point and Lindsay Leonard with 1 point…

Smith scoring:Tamani Manning with 17 points…DJ Jackson with 6 points…Destiny McCollough with 6 points…Aasiyah Cobb with 6 points….

  1. Even though Davidson Day was in the same conference with GDS, Davidson Day will be playing in the 2A state tournament and not the 3A tournament next week. All levels 1A, 2A and 3A will be in Asheville at the same time.

  2. Thought I had heard that about Davidson Day before, that they were 2-A and thanks for bringing that to the table…

They still seem to be fairly new on the scene…

WES, GDS, HPCA and then who else do we have at or near the top of the 3-A’s???

  3. Simpson is very good player d1 talent, however that Seegars kid just has another gear he’s explosive and will posterize anyone my vote Seegars, Overton third

  4. Jalen Burnett should be in this conversation, every team in the conference sends double teams at him and all types of junk defenses. He still puts up numbers, not just points either.

  5. Hands down, Aaron Simpson deserves conference player of the year. He is an all around player, both on offense and defense. He is a game game changer. I mean come on, not to point out just one game but for his senior night he gave Grimsley 32 points… He shows up for huge games!

  6. A fan were u not at any page/Smith games couldn’t have been seegars out rebounded those guys scored at will was double clutching backwards dunking need I continue? Simpson is a great player I admit but come on over seegars NO WAY again just my opinion, oh yea Puryear is pretty awesome as well, Andy your thoughts??

  7. Simpson #1 and Seegars #2, Seegars #1 and Simpson #2….I have seen so much of those two, they have to be the top two for the Metro 4-A Player of the Year and who knows, you could have a tie…

Simpson the senior and Seegars the junior and that might factor in the coaches may go with the senior and then Seegars has come back and duplicate this year and take it a step further next year…

John P had a great year, but he tailed off some toward the end of the year and that was due to the fact that some of the other Whirlies started stepping up…

John is a pure scorer and sometimes he is not called upon to do some of the things that Simpson and Seegars do…

All three with very good years, but I still lean toward Seegars and Simpson and we have to remeber Seegars carried Page to a third place win over Smith back at the Haeco and I think that I am right in that memory….
