College Men’s Basketball Final – Guilford 73, Bridgewater 66

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Matt McCarthy scored 12 of his game-high 19 points in the second half of Guilford College’s 73-66 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball victory over visiting Bridgewater College Saturday.

McCarthy, one of five seniors honored before the Quakers’ final regular-season home game, was held to one point for the game’s first 11 minutes. He made his first field goal, the first of five three-pointers, 9:02 before halftime. His second three, two minutes later, broke a 19-19 tie and gave Guilford (17-6, 10-4 ODAC) the lead for good.

Senior Jonny Rice added 14 points for Guilford, including a layup 49 seconds before half time that opened a 34-32 halftime lead for the Quakers.

The margin grew to as many as 13 points in the second half, but Kyle Welty put the Eagles (10-13, 5-9 ODAC) on his back and brought them back into the game. The 6-5 senior forward netted 15 of his game-high 19 points in the second half. He scored the Eagles’ first 12 second-half points and converted a traditional three-point play with 6:22 remaining that drew Bridgewater to within 58-54. The four-point deficit was as close as the Eagles would get the rest of the way.

Freshman Sanders Rohs (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) chipped in a personal-best 10 points off the bench, including two three-pointers. He also added a career-high five rebounds, which helped the Quakers hold a 46-33 edge in the battle of the boards. Rice collected a game-high eight caroms and added two blocked shots. Guilford grabbed 21 offensive rebounds, which helped the Quakers to a 17-6 edge in second-half points.

ODAC scoring leader Ed Reddick scored 11 of his 13 points (over five below his season average) in the second half for Bridgewater. Benaiah Wise chipped in with 10 points off the bench in front of some hometown fans.

Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers visit Lynchburg College Wednesday night (2/18). Guilford has won eight of its last 10 games.
