College Softball Finals – Guilford 4 – 5, Meredith 7 – 0

RALEIGH, N.C. – Tyler Miles (Burlington, N.C./Western Alamance/Mars Hill) threw a complete-game shutout in her first start with Guilford College as the Quakers split a Saturday afternoon doubleheader with Meredith College. The Avenging Angels took game one, 7-4, but the Quakers rebounded to take the nightcap, 5-0.

Miles’ (1-0) victory came in game two as the sophomore allowed just six base runners in seven innings. She struck out two and allowed just two hits while walking four batters. The Quakers (1-1) ran Meredith starter Amanda White, scoring all five runs in the first four innings before Taylor Jackson relieved White to throw the final three and two-thirds innings, striking out four after throwing a complete-game victory in game one.

Rachel Howard was the lone Quaker with a multi-hit effort in game two, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI, capping the Quakers’ rally in the top of the second inning and sparking the rally in the top of the fourth by driving in the first run in the rally.

Guilford jumped to a 3-0 lead after the first three innings of game one before Meredith answered with one run in the fourth frame. Meredith posted six runs in the sixth inning to claim the lead thanks to a rally-capping grand slam from Eran Artigues.

Howard went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double, with runs driven in first-inning rally and the attempted comeback bid in the top of the seventh inning. The senior finished the afternoon 4-for-7 with four RBI. Marty Wilcox earned the Quakers lone remaining RBI on the afternoon, sparking the Quaker rally in the top of the third inning with a one-out infield single.

Artigues finished 2-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI in the first contest while Katlyn Johnson led the Avenging Angels at the plate, hitting 3-for-4 in the first contest.

Jackson (1-0) struck out four batters in game one to total eight strikeouts in ten and two-thirds innings of work with three of the four Quakers’ game-one runs earned.

Casey Snead (0-1) took the game one loss, throwing four and one-third innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits while fanning four and walking three. Maggie Shaffer relieved Snead in the fifth, throwing one and two-thirds innings giving up three unearned runs on five hits.

The Quakers open their 2015 home schedule Wednesday, hosting William Peace University in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Haworth Field.
