GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior guard Brittany Glasco totaled 16 points, 12 rebounds, six steals and three assists in Virginia Wesleyan College’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) 69-62 overtime basketball win at Guilford College Saturday.
The Marlins (15-8, 9-5 ODAC) outscored Guilford, 12-5, in overtime to sweep the season series from the Quakers (14-9, 8-6 ODAC) and end the host’s five-game winning streak. The victory also moved Virginia Wesleyan into sole possession of fourth place in the ODAC standings with a week to play in the regular season. The top-four squads after the regular season earn a first-round bye in the ODAC Tournament.
The entertaining game featured eight ties and 14 lead changes. The Quakers went ahead, 57-52, on two Kali Cuttaia (Eden, N.C./Morehead (Univ. of Charleston)) free throws with 2:09 left in regulation, but the Marlins rallied to scored the next five points and force extra time. Glasco, who’s layup with 67 seconds left tied the game, had a chance to put Virginia Wesleyan ahead, but missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw chance with 10 seconds left.
Guilford won the tip in overtime, but missed two shots and turned the ball over four times on its first six possessions. Symonne Newsome scored on a follow basket a minute into overtime and Nancy Kelly followed with four free throws to open a 63-57 Marlins’ edge with 3:18 remaining. The Quakers made one of five shots and had five turnovers in overtime.
Kelly finished with 14 points and had four rebounds and three steals for Virginia Wesleyan. Andrea Paphites and Alexis Platt both scored 13 points for the Marlins. Paphites added eight rebounds and a game-best three three-pointers. The Marlins held a 43-32 rebounding advantage.
Guilford’s Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) led all scorers with 23 points and paced the Quakers with eight rebounds and four steals. Brittany Drew (Greensboro, N.C./Page) finished with 14 points and three boards.
