College Baseball News – Guilford Pair Lands Weekly ODAC Honors

FOREST, Va. – Guilford College swept both Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Player of the Week Awards Monday for the first time since March 23, 2009. Junior Jacob Roberts (Warsaw, Va./Rappahannock) won the league’s Hitter of the Week Award and sophomore Chase Shuford (Matthews, N.C./Porter Ridge) received the loop’s Pitcher of the Week honor.

Roberts, a 5-6 junior utility man, extended his hitting streak to eight games dating to last season with hits in each of the Quakers’ three home victories last week. He hit went six-for-11 with three runs scored, two doubles and three RBI. Roberts was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle and had a career-high three hits in Guilford’s 9-3 home win over Averett University Feb. 11. He delivered an RBI triple in the fifth that broke a 1-1 tie and had a sacrifice fly an inning later that opened a 4-2 lead. Roberts had a hit and a stolen base in the Quakers’ 2-0 win over NCAA Division II Bluefield State College Feb. 14 and went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the nightcap, a 9-2 Guilford win.

Five games into the season, he’s batting .538 with a club-high seven hits, two doubles and two RBI.
Shuford shined in his first start of the season, hurling a career-high six shutout innings. The 6-1, 190-pound sophomore right-hander, scattered two hits and a walk while striking out six. He retired the final 14 batters he faced to collect his second victory in his sixth career appearance.

Coach Nick Black’s ’02 Quakers (3-2) take a three-game winning streak into a weekend tournament in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia. Guilford plays DeSales University Saturday (2/21) at 3:00 p.m. and meets Moravian College Sunday (2/22) at 11:00 a.m.
