GC Pride WBB Claim Share Of USA South North Division Title With Victory Over Meredith

GREENSBORO, NC – The Greensboro College women’s basketball team returned to Mayo C. Harlow Memorial Court on Friday night. The Pride went into the halftime break trailing, 29-23, but was able to respond back in the second half for a 62-54 clinching at least a share of USA South Athletic Conference Northern Division title.

Meredith College jumped out to an early 10-3 lead before the Pride responded back with a 9-0 run to take a 12-10 lead. Marla Crawford got the run started with a long three before Joslyn Spires capped off the run with five straight points.

Once Greensboro established the two point margin, Meredith was able to jump out by a nine point margin at 29-20 before Alexis Hite hit a three ball to send the Pride into the break trailing 29-23.

Coming out to the halftime break, it only took the Pride four minutes to tie the game at 33-33 following a basket by Shanita Hampton.

After Greensboro tied the game, they were able to pull out to their largest lead of the contest at 62-52 with 2:30 showing on the game clock. Greensboro was aided by a 11-5 run over the previous four minutes of play to gain the edge. During the Pride run, Tiffani Stephens and Vontreece Hayes accounted for seven of the eleven points.

Greensboro was then able to hang on down the stretch to secure the, 62-54, victory. With the win over the Angles, the Pride women will have a chance to win the USA South Athletic Conference North Division Championship outright Sunday afternoon.

“Meredith is a really good team, and they presented us some tough matchups,” Pride Assistant Coach Jennifer King said following the game. “Our girls played really tough and we had some of them step up big in the second half, which has happened the past couple of games, that allowed us to grind out another victory.”

Joslyn Spires led the way for the Pride in the scoring column with eighteen points while Tiffani Stephens chipped in eleven points. For the second consecutive game, the Pride women out rebounded their opponent by a double digit margin. Greensboro finished the night with 57 rebounds while the Angels were only able to collect 46. Vontreece Hayes pulled down game high 16 boards on the night with seven of them coming on the offensive glass.

With the win, the Pride women improve their overall record to 20-4 while moving to 15-3 in USA South Athletic Conference play. The Pride women will close out their regular season with senior day on Sunday afternoon. Greensboro will host the Pacers of William Peace with a special senior salute prior to the game.
