Track and Field: Elon Sophomore Duo Leads Way at Virginia Tech Challenge

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Highlighted by new personal and school records in the one-mile run by Kimberly Johansen and Shelby Cuddeback, the Elon University women’s track and field team completed its first day of competition at the Virginia Tech Challenge on Friday, Feb. 20, inside the Rector Field House.

The sophomore duo of Johansen and Cuddeback finished first and fourth, respectively, in the race. Johansen broke her previous indoor school mark by six seconds with a time of 4:49.88. Cuddeback had a 23-second improvement over her previous personal-best with a time of 4:55.25, the second-fastest time on the program’s all-time performance list. Cuddeback also qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Championships next month.

Senior Jennifer Jarvis set a new personal-record in the weight throw with her mark of 13.54-meters. Sophomore Briana O’Grady was the Phoenix’s top finisher in the event with her heave of 14.33-meters, good for 12th overall.

In the 200-meters, junior Sydney Griffin was Elon’s top finisher in the race with her time of 25.58, good for sixth. Simone Jackson set a new personal-record in the race with her time of 26.41. Griffin also had a sixth-place standing in the 60-meter hurdles with her time of 8.81.

Jayna Coyle led the way for Elon in the triple jump with her leap of 11.33-meters.

The maroon and gold closes out the meet tomorrow, Feb. 21, with events beginning at 11 a.m.
