from Friday night with Michael Fields in Raleigh:
Friendship Christian and Vandalia Christian faced off Friday night in the NCCSA 2A State Tournament Semi-final game. It was technically an away game for Friendship Christian, because they were the lower seed. It was at their home court though. so it was really a home game for Friendship Christian. Vandalia Christian had to overcome their home crowd. Fortunately, Vandalia had a bigger crowd to support them as well. Vandalia was trying to beat Friendship to advance to their 2nd state championship game in 3 years. It wasn’t going to be easy for the Vikings, but they had the talent to do it. It was going to be a fantastic game nevertheless!

The game started out pretty well. Both teams played awesome out of the gate. They were evenly matched. They both played excellent defense. Both teams played zone defense. That was tough for both teams to overcome on offense. You can tell that it was going to be a low scoring game. Both teams were being scrappy on defense. They weren’t going to let the offenses take over the game. The score was pretty even throughout the first quarter. At the end of the quarter, Vandalia led by two points. It was the same way in the second quarter. Both teams struggled to score in the second quarter also. Both teams scoring under 11 points in the second quarter. Going into halftime, Vandalia led by four points. Both teams came out of halftime ready to go. They realized that there was only one half standing in front of them and a state tournament championship game if they won. Friendship came out pumped up and ready to go. They were starting to get into their offense. They made some three pointers. They made a few baskets. They made a little run on Vandalia. They closed the quarter on a 5-0 run. Friendship took the lead to end the quarter. They went into the fourth quarter with a two point lead.

This was the game changer. Friendship came out of the huddle to start the fourth quarter with five players that had not competed in the game yet. They were trying to give the starters a little rest since they had not sat yet. Friendship was hoping that these players could give them a little spark off the bench and valuable time for their starters to rest. Vandalia took advantage of this though. They scored six points within a minute. Friendship put their starters back in. That did not stop Vandalia though. They scored another basket to make it a 8-0 run. Friendship responded with a big basket to stop the momentum for the Vikings. Vandalia maintained the lead throughout the rest of the quarter. They did not look back. They kept pushing forward. They went on to get the HUGE win and advance to the state tournmaent championship game. The next opponent on Vandalia’s list: #1 seed Wilmington Christian

  1. Congratulations to Caldwell women’s team on 3rd consecutive conference championship. Probably need more than 2 players involved in the offense and to use a little more imagination. They are just too predictable!
