College Baseball Final – Frostburg State 10, Guilford 4

THOMASVILLE, N.C. – Frostburg State University raced to a 9-0 lead and never looked back in Sunday’s 10-4 nonconference baseball win over Guilford College at Finch Field. The victory gave the undefeated Bobcats (5-0) a sweep of the three-game weekend series with the Quakers (3-5).

Frostburg hit four singles in the bottom of the first inning to score three runs off of Guilford starter Lou Trosch (0-1). Kam Stewart hit a two-run double and scored when Nick Walker followed with a double in the Bobcats’ third inning. Walker’s hit chased Trosch from the game, but Frostburg tacked on three more runs in the second off of reliever Avery Rogers. One of three Guilford errors and a passed ball aided the Bobcats’ six-run frame.

The 9-0 deficit proved too much to overcome, but the Quakers kept chipping away. Guilford scored in the top of the third inning when rookie Austin Wilson led off the frame with his first college home run. The Quakers tacked on two more runs against Frostburg State starter Greg Schneider (2-0) on consecutive two-out, run-scoring hits by Logan Jones and Josh Shepherd in the sixth inning. Nathan Fulbright’s RBI double in the seventh capped Guilford’s scoring.

Walker had three hits and two RBI for Frostburg, which had 10 hits against three Guilford hurlers. Stewart finished with two hits and two RBI and Nick McElfish also had two RBI.

Tyler Petersen’s two hits paced the Quakers’ offense. Rogers (4.1 innings) and Justin Morrison (2.1 innings) did not allow an earned run out of the Guilford bullpen.

Coach Nick Black’s ’02 Quakers return McBane Field Wednesday to host Greensboro College at 3:00 p.m.
