JAMESTOWN, N.C. — Guilford Technical Community College’s women’s basketball team defeated Wake Tech Community College (80-45) on Sunday, Feb. 22, earning the Lady Titans the title of 2014-2015 NJCAA Region X Carolina-Virginia Regular Season Conference Champion.

Guilford Tech will advance to the NJCAA Division II Region X tournament March 5, 6 and 7 at Brunswick Community College. The Lady Titans are the No. 1 seed going into the tournament. The Titans claimed their last conference championship in 2011.

“It’s rewarding because they worked so hard, and it’s good to see them get their reward for what they’ve done,” said Head Women’s Basketball Coach Bobby Allison. “For them, it’s a big deal. They work really hard.”

With one week remaining in the regular season, the Lady Titans have established a 12-game winning streak. After Sunday’s victory, GTCC’s overall record is 23-3 with a Region X record of 16-1. They’re currently ranked No. 10 in the NJCAA Top National Poll.

Coach Allison attributes the team’s success to last season’s returning players and key leadership from second-year players Nyla Allen (Ben L. Smith High School), Selena Lozada (Western Guilford) and Priscilla Nobles (Victory Christian School). “They’re very invested in what we’re doing,” Allison said. “They believe in what we’re trying to accomplish and come focused every day.”

Allen and Lozada have been top performers throughout the season — Allen as the leading scorer and Lozada as a consistent, steady force. As the Lady Titans head into next week’s tournament, Coach Allison says he’ll be focusing on strengthening the team’s defense, particularly rebounding.

“We are not perfect by any means, so we need to continue to improve in all areas of the game,” he said. “Our focus is to win three games in three days; that has been the goal since day one.”

Coach Allison is assisted by Dejuane Bowe, Tiffany Watkins, Shirelle Butts and Mitchell Jennings.

They Lady Titans’ final home game is against Brunswick Community College at 3 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Ragsdale YMCA, 900 Bonner Drive, Jamestown.
