GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College stormed back in game two of the doubleheader at Greensboro College to avenge a walk-off sacrifice fly from Greensboro’s Hayley Rumley, forcing a Wednesday afternoon twin bill split at Salvation Army Field. Greensboro took game one, 5-4, while the Quakers took the nightcap, 18-2, in five innings.
Both sides dueled back and forth in game one, with Taylor Boyd tying the game in the top of the sixth inning with a one-out RBI-single with runners at the corners. With one out in the bottom of the seventh frame, the Pride loaded the bases when Rumley induced a sacrifice fly to earn the victory.
The Quakers roared back in game two with a six-run first inning, chasing game two starter Shelby Drummonds after one-third of an inning after giving up six runs (two unearned) on three hits while walking two. After Greensboro answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, Guilford put the game well out of reach, posting an eight-run rally. Eight of the 18 Guilford runs were unearned thanks to six Greensboro errors.
Caroline Barnette finished the afternoon leading Quaker bats, hitting 6-for-8 with a double, triple, and stolen base in game two. Brooks Bray’s (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) lone hit of the afternoon was a grand slam home run to elevate the Quakers’ second-inning rally in game two. Taylor Boyd hit 4-for-8 in the doubleheader with two doubles in the nightcap. Game two starting pitcher Casey Snead hit 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Jackie Nicholson lead the Pride at the plate, finishing the doubleheader 4-for-5 with one RBI. Chelsea Brewer added a RBI in game one while batting 2-for-4 in the first contest. Nicholson was the lone member of the Pride with multi-hit games in both contests.
Maggie Shaffer (1-2) took the game one loss for the Quakers, giving up five runs (three earned) on ten hits and fanning one batter while throwing a complete-game six and two-thirds innings. Casey Snead (1-0) took the game two complete-game win, giving up two runs on six hits, striking out one batter, and walking five.
Dawn Harris earned the game one start, throwing six innings and giving up four runs (two earned) on nine hits, striking out two and walking three. Lauren Miller (1-0) threw the final inning, giving up just one hit to earn the game one win. Miller relieved Drummonds (0-1) in game two after just one out and threw one and two-thirds innings while giving up eight runs on seven hits. Harris finished game two, reliving Miller for the final three innings, giving up four runs (all unearned) on five hits, striking out two, and walking one.
The Quakers return home Saturday, hosting Methodist University for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
