SHELBY—Mark Barnes, one of North Carolina’s top football coaches, has resigned as head football coach at Crest High School to take a job in South Carolina, according to a report in The Shelby Star.

Barnes, who has been at Crest for five years and won 63 games there along with a 2014 NCHSAA state 3-A championship, will take over the football program at Sumter High School in the Palmetto state. He guided teams to the title game on four occasions and also has coached in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas.

Barnes has been a head coach for 26 years, including stints at Reidsville, Scotland County and Brevard.

Joining the long list of coaches who can draw full retirement in NC while still coaching in another state. That is a good gig.
