College Golf Results – Guilford Takes Second at Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Guilford College shot 293-300-593 to place second at the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate, which concluded Sunday. Hosted by Berry College, the tournament was played over two days on the par-72, 7,057-yard Mountain View Course at the Callaway Gardens Resort.

The Quakers, who held a four-stroke lead after Saturday’s first round, finished four strokes behind LaGrange College, which shot 292 Sunday and shot a 36-hole total of 297-292-589. Methodist University carded the tournament’s low team score Sunday (289) and gained a share of second place with the Quakers at 304-289-593. Oglethorpe University (298-296-594) and Huntingdon College (300-301-601) rounded out the top-five units in the 19-team field.

Guilford sophomore Ty Palmer (Kernersville, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) shot 75 Sunday and placed a team-best seventh in the 102-man field at 72-75-147. Senior Drew Thompson posted the Quakers’ low score Sunday and moved into a share of 11th place on the individual leaderboard at 73-73-148. Teammate Tanner Gross (Archdale, N.C./Homeschooled) (72-76-148) was also 11th, three shots in front of Guilford rookie Harrison Frye (High Point, N.C./High Point Central), who came home in 20th place at 74-77-151. Guilford’s Travis Tolbert bounced back from Saturday’s 84 with a 76 Sunday and finished in a tie for 68th place.

Oglethorpe senior Anthony Maccaglia, the nation’s top-ranked NCA Division III player according to www.golfstat.com, fired a five-under-par 67 Sunday (the tournament’s low round) and claimed medalist honors with a 72-67-139. He started the day in a share of second place, three shots behind LaGrange individual Ryan Najiim, who shot 76 Sunday to finish fourth at 69-76-145. LaGrange’s Cory Howard posted a 73-69-142 and finished in second place, two strokes ahead of Methodist’s Jeff Wells (74-70-144).

The Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate featured eight teams ranked among the top-25 teams in this week’s Bushnell Golfweek Division III Coaches’ Poll, including second-ranked Oglethorpe and fourth-ranked Methodist University. The Quakers are ranked 14th.

Coach Justin Tereshko’s Quakers are back in action March 13-15 at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational in Jekyll Island, Ga.
