College Women’s Tennis Final – Guilford 7, Averett 2

DANVILLE, Va. – Guilford College claimed their first spring win of the season with a Saturday afternoon victory over Averett University, 7-2.

The Quakers (1-0) claimed two of the three doubles’ victories, led by Guilford’s top doubles tandem of Haley Andrews and Allison Hewitt, who claimed victory over Averett’s Hannah Mattson and Morgan Epstein, 8-3. Averett claimed victory in the third doubles match with Annalies Jobsis and Riley Smith defeating Luci Gordon and Mara Stern, 8-4.

Andrews and Mattson met a second time in the first-singles match with Andrews earning a two-set sweep. Andrews fought out a 7-6 first-set victory thanks to winning the tie-breaker, 7-5. The senior claimed an easier second-set victory, 6-1.

Hewitt and Epstein tangled a second time in the second-singles slot, with the senior claiming a two-set sweep, 6-0 and 6-1.

Frenanda Gonzalez (Siler City, N.C./Jordan Matthews) completed Guilford’s sweep of the top-three singles matches, defeating Averett’s Smith in two sets, 6-3 and 6-2.

The Quakers return to the court Thursday, facing Ferrum College at 1:30 p.m. on the McMichael Centennial Class Courts.
