Elon WLAX Falls at No. 2 North Carolina

?CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Elon women’s lacrosse team met a tough opponent in the No. 2 North Carolina today Sunday, March 1, suffering a 21-2 setback against the Tar Heels at Navy Field.

?The Phoenix (3-3) finished the game with 21 ground balls and eight shots, five of which were on goal, while tallying seven draw controls. Elle Hvozdovic and Sloane Kessler netted Elon’s two scores on the day, while Nicole Sinacori recorded one assist. Abby Godfrey led the team with five ground balls followed by four ground balls and two caused turnovers by Megan Weissman.

Both Rachel Ramirez and Tori Cipollone saw minutes between the pipes for the Phoenix. Ramirez tallied 11 saves on the day, while Cipollone recorded two of the team’s 13 saves.

The Tar Heels had a strong first half with 16 of its goals coming in the first frame. Elon came out with a stronger effort in the second half with two goals scored and only allowed five goals. Hvozdovic scored the maroon and gold’s first goal, off the assist from Sinacori, at the 25:35 mark in the second half. Kessler netted her goal with 5:50 remaining for her ninth goal of the season.

For the game, UNC (5-1) outshot Elon, 46-8, and picked up 29 ground balls. The Tar Heels claimed 18 draw controls and finished 10-of-11 in clear attempts. UNC’s Lindsay Scott led the team with four goals along with three by Aly Messinger.

Elon returns home for its next game on Friday, March 6, to host Coastal Carolina at 6 p.m. in Rhodes Stadium.
