Campbell Snaps Losing Streak to Elon Baseball

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – A trio of four-run innings helped the Campbell Fighting Camels to snap a seven-game losing streak against the Elon Phoenix in non-league baseball action on Monday, March 2, as Campbell picked up a 12-1 victory.

Campbell’s last victory over Elon was a 4-3 decision in 10 innings in Buies Creek, N.C., on April 16, 2002.

Monday’s game was scoreless until the last of the third. Campbell (8-2) got a leadoff single before Cedric Mullins lifted a ball down the right field line that clanged off of the foul pole for a two-run homer. With two outs, a hit batter and infield single put two on for Cole Hallum whose double to left-center made it a 4-0 contest.

Campbell added four more in the fourth after taking advantage of an Elon (5-3) error. The Camels capped their scoring with a four-run eighth before Elon broke through for its lone marker in the top of the ninth. Ryan Cooper led off the frame with a triple to center and scored on a Wil Leathers single.

Three Elon players tallied two hits – Casey Jones, Brett Guba and Cooper.

Lucas Bakker (1-2) took the loss after being charged with seven runs (six earned) in three-plus innings. Robbie Welhaf threw 4.1 solid innings of relief, striking out five.

The win went to Grant Yost (2-1) who allowed just five hits in six scoreless frames.

Elon will be back in action on Wednesday, March 4 for a 6 p.m. game against former Southern Conference rival Davidson. That game will be played at Wilson Field in Davidson, N.C.
