College Men’s Track and Field News – Guilford’s Martin Named ODAC’s Top Rookie

LANDOVER, Md. – Guilford College’s Alex Martin (Winston-Salem, N.C./Reagan) won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s Men’s Indoor Track and Field Rookie of the Year Award Sunday. Martin is the first Quaker so honored and was one of six Guilford contestants who earned all-conference honors.

Martin placed second and set the Guilford record with a leap of 6.81 meters in the long jump at Sunday’s 2015 ODAC Championships at the Prince George’s SportsPlex. He earned Second Team All-ODAC honors for the result, which bettered his own mark set just under a month earlier by .05 meters. Martin earned third-team all-league recognition with a third-place time in the 60-meter dash. His mark of 7.05 seconds was Guilford’s fastest this year. Martin also scored in the 200 with a fourth-place time of 23.11 seconds, the sixth-fastest time in school history.

Guilford’s 1,600-meter relay team of Johnny Sumner, Amaris Clay, Brandon Rothfuss and Trent Evans (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) placed second, which garnered second-team all-league recognition. The team finished second to Virginia Wesleyan College in three minutes, 29.04 seconds, which is also the second-fastest time in school history.

Senior Andris Goncarovs (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) captured Third Team All-ODAC honors by virtue of a third-place finish in the 5,000-meter race. His time of 15:21.70 ranks as fourth fastest all-time at Guilford.

Coach Danny Cash’s Quakers open the outdoor season March 14 at a meet hosted by the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
