College Women’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 12, Meredith 11 (2 OT)

GREENSB ORO, N.C. – Demming Carlow (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) scored the game-winning goal 1:13 into the second overtime period of Guilford College’s 12-11 women’s lacrosse victory over visiting Meredith College Wednesday night.

Meredith (1-2) overcame a four-goal halftime deficit and tied the game late in the second half, which forced a six-minute overtime period. The teams traded tallies in the first extra frame, which set up a second overtime, this one determined by sudden victory.

Meredith won the second overtime’s draw, but the teams traded turnovers in the opening minute. The Avenging Angels’ Victoria Doyle drove to the net where she was stopped from point-blank range by Quakers’ goalie Sarah Sedaghat (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive), who stepped out far from her cage to challenge the shot. She picked up the ensuing ground ball and triggered a transition that got the ball forward to Carlow. Carlow cleared the ball into the offensive zone and let the game-winning shot fly from about six yards out to the right of the goal.

Carlow scored a career- and game-high five goals. Her three first-half goals helped the Quakers to a 6-2 halftime lead. Rookie Carter McLeod and Kira Buss (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) both tallied twice and the Quakers’ Eleanora Keene totaled a goal and two assists. She also won 11 draws and picked up eight ground balls, both game highs. Sedaghat stopped six shots and had three ground balls in her first college victory.

Danielle Lee (Smithfield, N.C./Smithfield-Selma) scored a team-high three goals. Her third tally was 1:32 into the first overtime period and gave the Angels their final lead. Guilford’s Marina Bailey answered with an unassisted goal 19 seconds later, which forced the match’s fifth and final tie.
Doyle’s four points on two goals and two assists paced the Angels. Teammate Lottie Meadows had two goals and an assist. Katie Burnet added two scores and won three draws. Meghan Brooks made two saves and picked up three ground balls in goal.

Coach Sarah Lamphier’s Quakers (1-1) host Catholic University of America Sunday (3/8) at 1:00 p.m. on Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.
