College Women’s Tennis Final – Guilford 5, Salem 4

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Seniors Haley Andrews and Allison Hewitt both won in singles and doubles to help Guilford College secure a 5-4 tennis victory over visiting Salem College Friday afternoon.

Andrews and Hewitt teamed for an 8-3 victory at first doubles over the Spirits’ Andrea Akers and Allie Watkins. Guilford’s second doubles tandem of Fernanda Gonzalez and Nora Prokosch claimed an 8-3 victory at second doubles over Ashley Koehler and Leia Pruitt, which helped the Quakers to a 2-1 lead after doubles play.

Andrews edged Akers at first singles, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) and Hewitt dispensed of Koehler, 6-3, 6-0, at second singles. The Quakers’ Mara Stern earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over Salem’s Watkins in the fifth-singles contest.

Salem’s Samantha Story was a two-time winner for the Spirits (0-2). She and Ayla Pruitt won at third doubles over Guilford’s Stern and Luci Gordon, 8-3. Story also squeaked past Gordon in sixth singles play, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

Coach Dave McCain’s Quakers (2-0) host Randolph-Macon College Saturday (3/7) at 2:00 p.m. in both teams’ Old Dominion Athletic Conference openers.
