College Baseball Finals – Va. Wesleyan 13-8, Guilford 1-4

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sean Greiser struck out 11 batters in six innings of Virginia Wesleyan College’s 13-1 baseball win at Guilford College that gave the Marlins a sweep of Sunday’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader. Matt Murray had five hits and two RBI in the Marlins’ 13-1 opening-game victory.

Greiser, a 6-0, 190-pound lefthander, fanned at least two Quakers in all but the third inning and struck out the side in the fifth. He scattered two singles and overcame five walks to collect his first win of the season. The Marlins’ offense took advantage of some shoddy Guilford defense to score three runs in the first inning and two more in the second, all of which were unearned. Jordan Miller’s two-out, two-run double in the first was the big blow and his bases-loaded, two-out walk in the following inning made it a 5-0 Virginia Wesleyan lead.

The Quakers (4-9, 1-4 ODAC) got on the board in the third inning on Trey Mabry’s RBI fielder’s choice, but Virginia Wesleyan’s Josh Mason answered with a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning. Guilford starter Chase Shuford (1-3) walked Miller before leaving the game for reliever Lou Trosch. C.J. Lindsay greeted Trosch with a run-scoring triple to the right-centerfield gap and later scored on an RBI groundout for an 8-1 Marlins’ lead after three-and-half innings.

Guilford drew to within 8-4 on Grayson Tuttle’s first homer of the year, a towering three-run shot over the tall left field fence in the seventh inning. Virginia Wesleyan reliever Austin Gammon allowed a leadoff hit in the eighth, but retired the next six batters in order to finish the game.

Virginia Wesleyan (3-1, 3-0 ODAC) banged out a season-high 20 hits in the opener. The Marlins scored in five different innings and grabbed a 5-0 lead on Zach Bach’s two-run home run in the fourth.

A.J. Girting’s RBI double plated an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth, but Virginia Wesleyan answered with four runs in the top of the fifth. Randy Neisz delivered an RBI triple and Bach had an RBI double in the frame.

Lindsay went four-for-six and scored three times for the Marlins. Bach finished with three hits and three RBI in support of five Virginia Wesleyan pitchers. Dylan Stoskus picked up the win by allowing just a walk in two innings of relief.
