Three Advances for Elon Track and Field to the Finals on Second Day at ECACs

BOSTON – The Elon University women’s track and field team had three members of its squad advance to the final round after the second day of the Eastern College Athletics Conference (ECAC) Indoor Championships on Saturday, March 7, at Boston University.

Sophomore Kimberly Johansen broke her own school-record in the 800-meters with a time of 2:09.01. She finished fifth overall in the preliminaries and will race in the finals tomorrow, March 8.

Junior Sydney Griffin also advanced to the final round in the 60-meter hurdles. The Marietta, Ga., native clocked in a time of 8.85 in the prelims before putting up a time of 8.75 in the semifinals.

Tereza Novotna also moved on to the final day of the meet after she finished third overall in the one-mile at in the preliminaries. Novotna set a new personal-best time of 4:51.41 in the race.

“We had a very good, solid day,” said Elon director of track and field and cross country Mark Elliston. “To have three members make it to finals tomorrow is huge for us. To have a few of them break some school-records and set new personal-bests along the way was really exciting.”

Junior Jen Esposito clocked in a time of 56.19 in the 400-meter preliminaries just missing advancing to the final round. Shelby Cuddeback had a prelim time of 5:04.54 in the one-mile run while Megan Kirschling finished the high jump event after clearing the bar at 5’ 4.5”.

The final day of the meet begins tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. while the Phoenix’s first event, the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with Griffin, starts at 11:30 a.m.
