Elon Softball Drops Road Contest at Charlotte, 3-0

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Elon University softball team fell at Charlotte, 3-0, on Thursday, March 12, at the Phillips Softball Complex.

Charlotte’s (11-8) pitcher Lexi Betancourt threw a no-hitter despite giving up seven walks on the day to the Phoenix (12-6) in Elon’s first true road game of the year.

Charlotte scored the first runs of the game in the bottom of the third. The 49ers led off the frame with a single to the outfield followed by another runner reaching base on a fielder’s choice. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, a sacrifice fly to right plated a run for Charlotte to give the 49ers a 1-0 lead. An infield single added another run to put the Phoenix in a 2-0 hole after the third.

In the bottom of the fourth, Elon quickly turned away the first two batters before the 49ers’ Grace Beatty hit a solo shot to left center to put Charlotte ahead 3-0.

Elon had an opportunity to potentially score some runs in the top of the fifth. KIandra Mitchum and Sarah Little drew lead off walks to begin the inning before Mitchum moved over to third on a fielder’s choice with two outs. A pop up ended the threat however as the game moved to the seventh.

The Phoenix could only get two more base runners on before losing its third straight to the 49ers. Mitchum (6-4) suffered the loss for Elon after going 4.0 innings with three hits, three runs, all earned, allowed with a strikeout.

Elon is back in action tomorrow, March 13, to host North Carolina Central. That game has been moved up to a 2:30 p.m. start.
