JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – Guilford College’s men’s golf team shot 299 in Saturday’s second round of the 54-hole Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational and climbed three spots into eighth place. The Quakers have a two-day score of 601 after playing 36 holes on the par-72, 6,711-yard Jekyll Island Golf Club’s Pine Lakes Course.
LaGrange College started the day one stroke out of first place, but carded Saturday’s low round with an even-par 288. The Panthers are at two-over 578 for the tournament, six strokes ahead of the rest of the 30-team field. Illinois Wesleyan College shot 290 Saturday and climbed into second place at 584, five shots in front of Oglethorpe University (296-293-589). First-round co-leaders Huntingdon College and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges both shot 306 Saturday and slipped into a three-way tie for fourth place at 595 with Methodist University.
Guilford sophomore Ty Palmer (Kernersville, N.C./Forysth Country Day) shot the Quakers’ low round for the second straight day with his second round of 74. His 36-hole score of 148 (+4) shares 23rd place in the 150-man field. Teammates Harrison Frye (High Point, N.C./High Point Central), Tanner Gross (Archdale, N.C./Homeschooled) and Drew Thompson each fired 75 Saturday, which accounted for the rest of the Quakers’ second-round scoring. Thompson is five-over for the tournament (74-75-149) and in a share of 34th place. Frye is in a group sharing 43rd place, one stroke behind Thompson, after shooting 75-75-150.
Methodist’s Mason Stutler shot 69 Saturday to retain his individual lead at 139. LaGrange’s Cory Howard fired the tourney’s low score with a six-under 66 and moved three strokes behind Stutler at 73-66-139. Top-ranked Oglethorpe senior Anthony Maccaglia retained third place with his second round of 70.
