College Men’s Lacrosse Final – #10 Lynchburg 13, Guilford 4

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Austin Stewart tallied a game-high five goals to lead 10th-ranked Lynchburg College to a 13-4 lacrosse win at Guilford College Saturday in both teams’ Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener.

The Hornets (3-2, 1-0 ODAC) are ranked 10th in this week’s United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association NCAA Division III Poll. The Quakers (3-1, 0-1 ODAC) were listed among teams receiving votes in the poll.

Stewart had four goals by halftime, including two of the Hornets’ three extra-man tallies, which sparked the visitors to a 7-2 halftime lead. Stewart had two goals and an assist during Lynchburg’s 4-0 run that ended the second quarter.

The run carried all the way to the fourth quarter as Lynchburg outscored Guilford, 4-0, in the third quarter. Colin McGuire netted the second of his three second-half tallies to start the fourth-quarter scoring, which gave the guests a 12-2 margin.

Stewart finished with a game-high six points and linemate Aaron Murphy added five with two goals and a game-high three assists. McGuire added an assist to his day for four points. Chris Hawley, the first of four Lynchburg goalies, was strong with nine saves in 50 minutes. He allowed just two goals, caused two turnovers and had four ground balls. Bobby Distler won seven of 12 face-offs and collected a game-best five ground balls.

Guilford had four different goal scorers in the game, including defenders Cam Davis and Jake Sadd. Daniel Haupt and Chandler Zirkle also scored for the Quakers, who outshot Lynchburg, 40-35. Defensive midfielder Rufus Terry forced five Hornets’ turnovers and picked up three ground balls in a solid performance. Goalie Thomas Deane also had three pickups in addition to 10 saves.

Coach Tom Carmean’s Quakers host Alfred State College Wednesday (3/18) at 1:00 p.m.
