Elon Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season at Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Elon University women’s track and field team opened its outdoor season today, March 13, at the Coastal Carolina Invitational at the Doug Shaw Stadium.

“We had some good performances so things are going well,” said Elon director of track and field and cross country Mark Elliston. “It was really windy and cold, but we had some great performances in the weight throw and the javelin. We had a few things going good today, but tomorrow is even a bigger day.”

Senior Jennifer Jarvis established a new personal-best in the hammer throw with her toss of 137’ 0” (41.75m). That mark broke her into the top-five all-time on the program’s performance list as she finished 12th overall. Sophomore Briana O’Grady was 16th in the event with a heave of 129’ 3” (39.40m).

Freshman Emily Dixon had a runner-up finish in the seeded long jump with a leap of 18’ 9” (5.71m). Fellow freshman Lydia Laws was 13th overall with her jump of 17’ 0.75” (5.20m) while Carrie Abraham was 18th at 16’ 2.25” (4.93m).

Jarvis was also the Phoenix’s top athlete in the javelin throw with her mark of 114’ 5” (34.88m). In the 4×800-meter relay, the quartet of Brigid Brennan, Corey Weiss, Jenny Gallagher and Kaitlin Snapp finished as the runner-up with a time of 9:34.32, third-best in school history.

The Phoenix’s 4×200-meter relay team of Jen Esposito, Jennifer Pash, Simone Jackson and Sydney Griffin was fifth overall with a time of 1:42.27. That time now sits third all-time in school history.

Elon is back in action tomorrow, March 14, to close out the two-day meet.
