College Men’s Golf Results – Guilford Finishes Eighth at Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – Guilford College’s men’s golf team shot 290 in Sunday’s third and final round of the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational. The Quakers secured eighth place in the distinguished 30-team field with a 54-hole score of 302-399-290-891.

LaGrange College posted the tournament’s low round Sunday with a three-under-par 285 and won the tournament by 10 strokes over second place Illinois Wesleyan College. The Panthers shot 290-288-285-863 (-1) on the par-72, 6,711-yard Pine Lakes Course at the Jekyll Island Golf Club. Methodist University shot 286 Sunday and climbed a spot ahead of second-ranked Oglethorpe University for third place. The Stormy Petrels placed fourth, two shots ahead of first-round co-lead Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.

Sophomore Tanner Gross (Archdale, N.C./Homeschooled) posted the Quakers’ lone sub-par round with a one-under 71 Sunday that featured four birdies, all on the back-nine holes. He finished in 51st place among 150 with a three-day score of 79-75-71-215. Travis Tolbert shot his best round of the weekend Sunday with 16 pars, a birdie and a bogey for a round of 72 that helped him climb into 82nd place on the individual leaderboard at 81-78-72-231. Drew Thompson’s 73 Sunday helped him catch Ty Palmer (Kernersville, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) for the Quakers’ best overall finish as both players shared 27th place at 222. Palmer and Harrison Frye (High Point, N.C./High Point Central) both shot two-over 74 Sunday.

LaGrange’s Cory Howard and Methodist’s Mason Stutler shared medalist honors with nine-under 207. Howard shot a four-under 68 Sunday to catch Stutler, the second-round leader who shot 71 Sunday. Oglethorpe’s top-ranked senior, Anthony Maccaglia, came home third at 70-70-70-210 (-6).

Coach Justin Tereshko’s Quakers return to action March 30-31 at the Wynlakes Intercollegiate in Montgomery, Alabama. Guilford is ranked 15th in the latest Golfstat.com Division III Head-to-Head Ratings. The Jekyll Island Collegiate featured 16 of the poll’s top-30 teams.
