Elon Softball Tallies First Road Win at UNCG, 6-2

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Behind three RBI from freshman Kara Shutt and a solo home run by senior Aly Quintana, the Elon University softball team picked up its first true road win of the year in a 6-2 victory over I-40 rival UNCG today, March 15, at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

The win improved the Phoenix to 14-6 on the year while the Spartans fell to 12-7. Elon starter Kiandra Mitchum (7-4) earned the win after not allowing an earned run in her 5.2 innings of work.

Freshman Hannah Olson paced the Phoenix offensive attack at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance while Shutt, Quintana, Alaina Hall, Emily Roper and Emily Cameron all had a hit on the day as the Phoenix outhit the Spartans, 7-5.

UNCG jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Phoenix was able to quickly record the first two outs of the frame, before allowing base runners to reach on a hit-by-pitch and a walk. A single to center followed that appeared to load bases, but a mishandle of the ball on the throw back to the infield led to two runs scoring to the Spartans.

After both teams went scoreless in the second, the Phoenix bats came alive in the top of the third. Madison Kadlic received a one-out hit-by-pitch and moved to second on a single by Olson. Another single by Hall loaded the bags before Shutt hit a bases clearing triple to put the maroon and gold ahead 3-2. Another single up the middle by Cameron drove in Shutt and gave the Elon a 4-2 advantage in the third.

Elon added another run in the top of the fifth. Hall reached on a one-out single and moved second on a stolen base. An error by the Spartans’ third baseman on Cameron’s at bat led to Hall to score from third and gave the Phoenix a 5-2 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Quintana added to the lead with her second home run of the year to put the Phoenix up 6-2. The Miami, Fla., native sent the ball over the fence down the left field line and gave Elon some breathing room.

The Phoenix would not have any trouble for the remainder of the game, allowing only one other base runner in the final two innings and snapping a five-game losing skid to its long-time and former conference rival.

Elon is back in action on Tuesday, March 17, with a doubleheader versus Rider at Hunt Softball Park. The twin bill is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
