HPU Men’s Golf Leads Cape Fear Intercollegiate

LELAND, N.C. – The High Point University men’s golf team leads the 2015 Cape Fear Intercollegiate after firing a 587 (+11) in the first two rounds of play on Sunday.

Sophomore Jack Sides is leading the tournament at the Cape Fear National course in Leland, N.C. after shooting a -3 (141) for the day. The New Bern, N.C. native carded a -3 (69) in the first round, the lowest score of the day in the competition, before adding an even (72) on the second 18.

“Great day of golf for High Point,” head coach Greg Flesher said. “Sides had a tremendous outing and hit the ball well all day. I was thrilled to see our guys drive the ball well and hit on the fairways. They played really smart all day long and we’re looking forward having a chance to win the tournament tomorrow.”

Junior McKay Tye was right on Side’s heels after shooting a -2 (70) through the first 18 holes. The Asheville, N.C. native slowed his pace in the second round with a +3 (75), but is still in a tie for third place overall and is just two strokes out of second place.

Senior L.J. Georgetti was consistent throughout the day while posting a +2 (74) in both rounds. With one round to go, he is in a tie for 10th place at +4 (144). Redshirt-freshman A.J. Hopkins didn’t get off to his best start with an opening-round score of +7 (79), but rebounded nicely with a +2 (74) in the second round.

The Panthers hold a two-stroke lead over Gardner-Webb (591) and are 22 strokes clear off host Appalachian State (609), which sits in third place. HPU will look to hold onto its lead in the third and final round on Monday starting at 8 a.m.

The Purple & White will be back in action next weekend when it participates in the C&F Bank Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va. on March 22-24.
