College Baseball Finals: Shenandoah 6 – 9, Guilford 1 – 1

WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University’s John Wilt totaled five hits over the Sunday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader as Guilford College fell to Shenandoah in both games of the doubleheader. The Hornets took game one, 6-1, and the nightcap, 9-1.

Shenandoah (4-2, 4-1 ODAC) posted runs of game one first in the bottom of the second inning, led by a lead-off home run from Daniel Freshley. The Quakers (4-11, 1-6 ODAC) responded one-half inning later thanks to a Josh Shepherd RBI-single with two outs. The Hornets answered back in the bottom half of the inning and later produced a three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth frame to widen the margin. In game two, the Hornets posted runs in all but one inning while seven of Shenandoah’s nine starters earned a multi-hit game.

Shepherd was the lone Quaker with a multi-hit game one effort, batting 2-for-4 with an RBI-single. Nick Blackwood (Greensboro, N.C./Wesleyan Christian Academy) collected the lone Quaker RBI in game two while Kyle Humphrey (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) earned the long multi-hit effort in game two, batting 2-for-3 with a double.

Wilt finished the afternoon 5-for-11 with two RBI and a double while Michael Paul led the Hornets in RBI throughout the afternoon thanks to three RBI in game one. Ricky Pardo added three more RBI over the afternoon, batting 4-for-7 with a double.

Chase Shuford (1-4) took the game one loss for the Quakers giving up six runs on six hits while striking out two batters in five and two-thirds innings. Drew Martin (Germanton, N.C./South Stokes) gave up just three hits and struck out two batters in one and two-thirds innings of relief. Josh Bishop finished game one with a scoreless outing in two-thirds of an inning. John Todd (0-4) took the game two loss giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits. Avery Rogers, Lou Trosch, and Justin Morrison followed in relief with Trosch leading the way in middle relief, giving up one un-earned run on five hits while striking out two in two and one-third innings.

Darrell Thompson (1-0) collected the game one win for Shenandoah, giving up one run on three hits while fanning ten and walking one in eight innings. Matt Riegler threw the final inning, giving up two hits. Michael Scimanico (2-0) took the game two win giving up one un-earned run on five hits and fanning six. Steven Varner and Phillip Morse closed out the final two innings giving up just one hit combined and More striking out three.

The Quakers return to action tomorrow, hosting Tufts University for a 3 p.m. contest at McBane Field.
