College Softball Results – Guilford Wins Twice in South Carolina

LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – Tyler Miles threw a complete-game three-hitter and Caroline Barnette hit a tie-breaking home run in Guilford College’s 5-1 softball win over Rutgers University-Camden Monday.

The Quakers’ fourth straight victory marked their second of the day as Maggie Shaffer threw a one-hit shutout in Guilford’s 10-0, five-inning win over Keystone College earlier in the day.

Both games were played at the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex.

Miles improved to 4-1 and fanned a career-high nine batters in the victory. She stranded Scarlet Raptors (2-3) on third base in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Miles recorded at least one strikeout in every inning, including one of Mackenzie Mason to end the game.

Barnette was retired on two hard-hit balls in her first two at bats, but connected on a two-run home run in the fifth frame that broke break a 1-1 tie. Her second homer this year plated Darby Kozan, who singled with two outs.

Guilford (9-5) tallied twice in the sixth inning on Taylor Boyd’s RBI single and Steffi Sides’ second RBI of the game, a two-strike single to left.

Quakers’ senior Marty Wilcox banged out three hits in the game, including a double, and scored twice. Boyd added two hits for the second game in a row.

Guilford posted its second straight shutout in the opener thanks to Shaffer’s fifth career shutout. After Keystone’s Karissa Worobey started the game by reaching on an error, the junior retired the next 11 consecutive batters. The Giants’ Antonette Scialpi blooped a single just over first base in the fifth inning, which proved Keystone’s only hit. Shaffer did not walk a batter and struck out seven.

The Quakers’ offense exploded for six second-inning runs thanks to Calli Pastor’s two-run home run, later followed by a Rachel Howard grand slam. The four runs plated by Howard’s team-leading third homer of the year were unearned.

Erin Ogden added a two-out, two-run double in the third and Wilcox scored an unearned run in the sixth, which opened a 10-0 lead.
