Powerade State Games High School Baseball Coaches Announced
Registration is open and tryouts are scheduled to begin
DURHAM, North Carolina,– The Powerade State Games High School Baseball Showcase will take place June 17-21 at the USA Baseball Complex, N.C. State University, Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill. The High School Baseball Showcase pits the best 20 underclassmen players from eight North Carolina regions against each other to battle it out in front of over 80 college and professional scouts for the gold, silver and bronze medals.
The coaches have been selected for each regional team and are listed below with their high school in parentheses and the head coach listed first:
Region 1 – Jon Smith (Hunt), Corey Skinner (Ayden-Grifton), Greg Clifton (Faith Christian), Ryan Meadows (N. Pitt)

The Powerade State Games of North Carolina is gearing up for an exciting year of competition in the Triangle. The 29th annual Powerade State Games begin on May 30th and conclude on June 28th, hosting competitions in Raleigh, Cary and Durham. Registration is now open for all sports. The 2015 Opening Ceremonies will be held June 19 in City Plaza in Downtown Raleigh. The Opening Ceremonies feature a commemorative gift for participating athletes, inflatables, games, music, a parade of athletes and a lighting of the cauldron to announce the official start to the 2015 Powerade State Games of North Carolina.

Just a quick question to the people that read on greensborosports have there ever been any African American Coaches that have served on any baseball state games teams. I would love to know that answer? Andy do you know?
On first glance I would say yes, but then I would be thinking of basketball and not baseball…For Basketball, I’m sure we have had some and I just learned yesterday that the only difference in basketball and baseball is two letters….Take out the k and the t in basketball and you have baseball….
But back to your question, I don’t think I have seen any or at least many African American coaches on the staff for the State Games Baseball teams, at least not from around here or our area…
We need more that is for sure….Why not, but we need more African-American coaches on the high school level and the youth baseball level…
We have Coach Larry Farrer at Dudley and Coach Randy Norris at High Point Andrews and there is no reason why either one of those men should not receive a shot to coach in the State Games…
But other than Coach Farrer and Coach Norris, who else do we have out there locally coaching on the high school level that knows the game coming out of the African-American communities….

We have Coach Hardin at Page, Coach Flynn at Grimsley, Coach Beasley at Southeast, Coach Maness at Ragsdale, Coach Gann at Northwest, Coach Holmes at Southwest, Coach Harper at High Point Central, Coach Carter at Southern Guilford, Coach Causey at Western Guilford, Coach Kimrey at Northern Guilford, Coach Jay White at Eastern Guilford, Coach Brad White at Northeast Guilford and we have the new coach at Smith and is that Jonathan Spell??? I hope I am right there…
That is it…African-American coaches in baseball at Dudley, High Point Andrews and at Smith and that is it….
We have to sell the baseball more to the kids in the African-American communities and I know we hear that all of the time, but it is a real LONG process….
Now if we look at Track and Field on the other hand, we might see a whole different picture…Not sure and I can name most all of the baseball coaches, but when it comes to all of the current track coaches, I am out in left field, or just plain old “left out”….
A very good topic and a lot of work to do to get more kids involved in spring and summer baseball from our African-American communities and that is how we will get our high school and college coaches, we have to develop “Students of the Game”…..The ‘Lifers” as they used to teach us back in college….
Coach Farrer and Coach Norris are baseball “Lifers” and we don’t have enough of those on the block in the African-American communities…
I would bet you that Coach Norris and Coach Farrer grew up in rural America and that they learned their baseball craft there….I feel the inner-city has seen a huge decline in the way they treat baseball as a favorite sport…
In rural America, they still play baseball like it was played somewhat “back-in-the-day”….
We have lost our roots and we need more to be done to teach the Inner City kids that we have three seasons, at least we have three seasons of recreational sports and that is Football Season, Basketball Season and Baseball Season and if those three sports can still thrive in rural America, then the Inner Cities can pick them back up too, or at least you would think that is the way it should be…
Off the subject just a bit and a little respite from the serious nature of this topic/subject….I was wondering if Coach Mike Meadows from North Davidson has a brother named Tim and if he does we could get him to help and we would have Tim Meadows coaching for us and that might be a step in the right direction….
On the schools and neighborhood scene, Mike McClain attended and pitched for Dudley and got drafted out of Dudley High School for the pros and he is a man who we should encourage to get back into the community and drive to the Inner City…..I know he is out in the country these days in Climax, but we need him to bring it all back to Lincoln Street on an occasion….

Just think how things might have changed if Michael Jordan would have stayed and made it with the White Sox???
Maybe he should gone with the Cubs instead….
